Five days, Monday-Friday: 9:00 -1:00pm
Children in this class have the option of going onto kindergarten, however the “gift” of another year benefits many who attend this program. Our 5s class focuses on the children’s expanding interest in their environment and their rapidly growing social skills. Themes that are explored with hands on activities are science, seasons, transportation, family and community. The children’s days are filled with art, music, movement, cooking, woodworking and science projects; pre-reading & math skills are also introduced through their play. Field trips as well as other enrichment activities are planned throughout the year. The teachers encourage self regulation, impulse control and personal self sufficiency. The children are learning how to problem solve, resolve conflicts and make decisions.
Children are free to explore, experiment, investigate and communicate. They are encouraged to assume responsibility, take initiative and express themselves in a positive way. Working as a group cooperatively and engaging in creative, sustained play, learning to control impulsiveness are goals in preparation for their next year attending kindergarten. Literacy, oral dictation and expression of ideas are addressed through purposeful play.
